An Overview: 2018 SIS Abroad Summer Programs

Summer Programs Overview:
As yet another busy and exciting spring semester ends here at the School of International Service (SIS) we are pleased to be sending SIS students around the globe this summer to participate in international programs. During the 2018 summer term, SIS students are attending six SIS partner schools to earn at least 3 credits towards their degree. Additionally, we are also offering five faculty-led programs, including four practicum courses and one seminar. Many students are also participating in internships, conducting research and attending conferences abroad. We hope you can learn more about our programs through the student experience on this blog and through our SIS Abroad Instagram Account- stay tuned!

Program Highlights:

West Africa – New Seminar for 2018: We are thrilled to introduce our Understanding Development Partnerships course this summer which will be based in Freetown, Sierra Leone and led by SIS Faculty Susan Shepler.  Professor Shepler is arranging meetings with the Sierra Leonean Association of NGOs (SLANGO) in addition to other site visits and cultural excursions for the two-week course in July. Students will be working with Professor Shepler to develop group based and individual projects that work towards their professional and academic goals, as well as the missions of the organizations they meet. Students will also spend some time outside of the capital in Makeni, a three hour drive from Freetown.

Practicum Abroad - Cyber Conflict: Each year SIS offers a portfolio of practica programs, relevant to current student’s academic and regional interests, that also enable SIS graduate students to meet their capstone requirement through hands-on client-based projects abroad. In early June, SIS Professor Ben Jensen will lead a group of students to Copenhagen Denmark, with a day trip to Oslo, Norway, to explore cyber conflict in the Northern Europe region. At the end of the course, students will present government and corporate partners forecasts about the future of cyber conflict in the region.

On-Going Partnerships: This summer marks another year where we are working with our international partners to offer unique courses for students to take at one of many SIS partner schools. We continue to offer Development Policy, a two-week seminar that welcomes development professionals and practitioners to the University of Bonn over a two-week period in late-July. Students take part in site visits and learn with students from across Europe and the world. In addition to our semester abroad option, we also continue to offer classes through the UN University for Peace in Costa Rica. This opportunity allows students to select at least one 3-credit course to take on-campus just outside of San Jose.
